Google's much-improved app icons are rolling out now

Google is finally replacing those notoriously similar app icons that launched five years ago. If you've ever opened Gmail when you meant to open Maps, or stared at your home screen trying to remember which colorful blob does what, you know exactly what problem this solves.

The old icons leaned hard into Google's brand colors but forgot that icons need to be, you know, visually distinct. They all blurred together into a rainbow of confusion. The new designs apparently have more visual differentiation, making them easier to identify at a glance.

This matters more than it seems. When you're context switching between tools all day, every second of visual confusion adds up. Whether you're using Google Workspace for collaboration or just trying to navigate your phone quickly, clearer icons mean less cognitive load.

The rollout is happening now, so you should start seeing the new designs across your devices soon. It's a small quality of life improvement, but those tend to be the ones that actually stick with you.
