YouTube is finally acknowledging that people actually listen to podcasts on its platform. The company is rolling out new features designed specifically for audio listening, starting with Premium subscribers on Android today and coming to iOS later.
The headline feature is 'on-the-go mode,' which transforms YouTube into something closer to a real podcast app. It replaces the video with a still image, enlarges the playback controls, and shows you a timeline with chapter markers. YouTube will suggest switching to this mode if it detects you're moving around, or you can toggle it manually in the video settings.
There's also a new auto speed feature for people who like to blast through episodes at 1.5x or 2x speed. Instead of manually adjusting playback speed every time, you can now automate the process.
Why this matters: YouTube has become one of the biggest podcast platforms by accident, but it's been frustratingly video-first. These features suggest YouTube is serious about competing with Spotify and Apple Podcasts for podcast listeners, not just watchers.
The catch is that these features are Premium-only for now. If you're already paying for YouTube Premium to skip ads, you're getting a better podcast experience. If you're not, you're still stuck with the same clunky video interface.
