Pornhub is unblocking UK users who verify their age with Apple

Pornhub just unblocked UK users who verify their age through Apple's system. Parent company Aylo announced that iOS users in the UK can now access the site fully after going through Apple's age verification process.
This is a big shift. Pornhub blocked all UK traffic earlier this year rather than comply with the country's Online Safety Act, which requires age verification for adult content. The company argued that forcing users to upload government IDs created privacy and security risks.
Apple's system offers a middle ground. It uses on-device verification tied to payment methods and account history, so users don't have to hand over sensitive documents directly to adult sites. The verification happens through Apple, not Pornhub.
For AI and tech professionals, this matters because age verification is becoming a regulatory requirement across multiple sectors. Social media platforms, AI chatbot providers, and content services are all facing similar mandates in different jurisdictions.
The approach could set a precedent. If Apple's privacy-preserving verification works at scale, other platforms might adopt similar systems. That would be preferable to the alternative, a patchwork of government ID requirements that create honeypots of sensitive data.
Right now this only applies to iOS users in the UK. Android users and people on other platforms are still blocked. Whether this expands depends on how well the system works and whether other tech companies build comparable solutions.
